The 2nd Cornwall Light Infantry battalion were in Hong Kong when the war started in August, 1914, but they soon returned to England where they joined 82 Brigade, 27th Division which landed in France in December, 1914. 82 Brigade took over the St Eloi sector, south of Ypres where they stayed until mid-March. On 12th January, 1915, 2nd Cornwall moved into the line for the first time when they took over some trenches at Dickebusch. The battalion suffered their first casualties on 13th January, 1915 when two men were killed and another fourteen wounded by shell fire. Frank Barham was one of those killed. |
